Bruce Springsteen “Dancing in the Dark”

In June of 1984, I was invited up to Minneapolis to photograph the beginning of Bruce’s “Born in the USA” tour. I was asked to come up a day early to be a fly on the wall for Bruce’s first video shoot for the song “Dancing in the Dark”, directed by Brian DePalma. I arrived at an empty arena with the band on stage and the video crew in front of the stage, and had total access to shoot from wherever I wanted to be as long as I didn’t get in a camera shot. They let a small audience in to sit behind the stage so it would look like a sold out show (they shot a bunch of takes the next day with a sold out crowd for the first show). I heard that song about 50 times that day, and I am still not tired of it!

This shows Brian DePalma directing from behind Bruce during a close up.

The girl that Bruce pulled out of the crowd was an unknown model from Alabama who had auditioned for the part. Her name was Courtney Cox and she went on to fame in “Friends.”
