Count Basie and Ella Fitzgerald


In the early 1980’s the PBS station in Chicago produced a series of concert specials called Soundstage, directed by Ken Erlich. I was asked on occasion to step in and be a second photographer on some of them. The most momentous of them was:

September 15th, 1982. The Count Basie Quartet with Ella Fitzgerald as the vocalist, with special guests Joe Pass on Guitar and Roy Eldridge on Trumpet.

January 8th, 1980. Johnny Paycheck and Mickey Gilley tear up the house at a Soundstage taping.

May 9th, 1982. Roger Miller brings some country music to PBS.



Allen Toussaint


June 18th, 1982. Allen Toussaint brings some New Orleans soul to Chicago.
