Lila Downs

March 3rd, 2012 in Chicago. Extremely colorful Mexican folk-rock singer with a really amazing band backing her up.

Hugh Masekela

March 13th, 1987 in Chicago. A South African trumpeter, singer and composer who had a big American hit with song “Wade in the Water.” I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to photograph such an important musician.

Juanes

February 1st, 2012 in Miami, Florida. I photographed Juanes (the Columbian Bruce Springsteen) in Chicago and showed him my work before his show. Shortly after that his manager called me and asked me if I wanted to come to Miami to photograph him during the recording of an MTV Unplugged concert. The pictures ended up on the cover of the CD that was released from that concert.

The Chieftains

July 29th, 1987 in Tinley Park, Illinois. Because of my love of folk music, I could not resist the opportunity to do a photo shoot with these young men from Ireland. Man, can they rock! They had the audience on their feet for the whole night.

Maná

July 21st, 2011 in Rosemont, Illinois. I have photographed them several times and they never fail to amaze me. They are not called the Mexican Bon Jovi for nothing. At the moment of this photograph, I thought to myself- that’s some impressive fake rain (we were indoors). Soon my feet were soaked with water running out from under the stage- real water!

Bob Marley

November 14th, 1979 in Chicago. Early in my career, I realized that I would have to seek out all genres of music if I was going to be succesful. My first experiment was to go to a Bob Marley concert, and I was hooked! They audience was almost all Jamacian (in downtown Chicago) and they are totally uninhibited- but in a real nice way. A great night and it informed me that there was a lot out there besides Rock and Blues.

King Sunny Adé

August 19th, 1983 in Chicago. I was photographing a multi stage 10 day long festival in downtown Chicago. Every hour or so I would walk over to the world music stage to put a smile on my face. This was one of those times.

Julieta Venegas

September 13th, 2008 in Chicago. I spent a few days with this Grammy-winning Mexican folk artist, photographing her for an ad for Shure Microphones. SHE WAS FABULOUS!!

Dobet Gna’hore

July 8th, 2010 in Chicago. I never miss an opportunity to photograph this beautiful African woman when she appears at the World Music Festival. A can’t miss photo opportunity!

Alejandro Sanz

May 4th, 2004 in Rosemont, Illinois. This Spanish crooner is a joy to work with, although I need an interpreter to talk to him or understand his music!

Toots Hibbert of Toots and the Maytals

April 2nd, 1982 in Chicago. After I photographed Bob Marley, I was into anything Jamaican. So when Toots came to town, I had to be there!
