Chris Cornell

April 19th, 2009 in Chicago. I had photographed Chris many times during his tenure in Soundgarden and Rage Against the Machine, and knew that wonderful voice and stage presence. He proved it all again during this solo appearance.

Trent Rezner of Nine Inch Nails

May 8th, 1994 in Chicago. This photograph was taken for the Reader during a period in the 90’s when they went back to covering music. It was an explosive show with great sound and lights- a pleasure to shoot.

Alanis Morissette

December 20th, 1995 in Rosemont, Illinois. This photograph was taken during her first appearance in Chicago when I was asked by her record company to photograph her for the cover of a CD single they were releasing of her first single. They needed it right away so I had to pack up the film-remember film?- and drive to the airport and put it on a plane to NYC that night. Got the film back from them a few days later and found out that I had done pretty well. She requested that the picture on the cover be used for a T shirt on the 25th Anniversary tour for the album.

Atlas Genius

March 5th, 2013 in Chicago. This Australian band became a Shure Microphone endorser in 2013 and I was sent to photograph them. During the last song of the show, the singer/guitarist climbed up on the bass drum, turned around and jumped off. I got one of the coolest shots I have ever taken. The next time the band came to town, I made a print and took it with me when I shot them again. The singer asked me how I got the picture and I answered “I shot it after all the other photographers were sent home!” His next question to me was- “Why do we kick all the photographers out after 3 songs?” I had no answer for him.

Thom Yorke of Radiohead

August 1st, 2001 in Chicago. This was an assignment for a new (at the time) magazine called Blender. Radiohead was playing in a downtown park that had not been used very much for events. They played at dusk, with great lighting, which made for great photographs. The event was so perfect that the park was soon used as the site for the Lalapalloza festival.

Henry Rollins

August 13th, 2006 in Chicago. Another Shure endorser, Henry was a joy to photograph, and even more so a joy to have a conversation with! Mild mannered offstage, he became a raving maniac on stage. Impossible to get a bad shot of him.

Dave Grohl of The Foo Fighters

May 25th, 2003 in Chicago. I had an assignment from Shure and from Rolling Stone to photograph the show. The band begrudgingly allowed me to shoot 2 songs rather than the 1 song they were allowing other photographers. I made the best of a bad situation and got a pretty good shot. It was the last time I shot the band as they seemed to have solved the problem by not letting anyone shoot! My favorite reaction was from a Minneapolis Weekly who drew a stick figure of Dave and put it on page one! The band didn’t seem to care.

Brandon Flowers of The Killers

May 10th, 2005 in Chicago. The band seemed to bring some neon signs from their hometown of Las Vegas. It suited them.

Chad Kroeger of Nickelback

March 2nd, 2007 in Terre Haute, Indiana. One of the leaders of the new era of heavy music. I spent some time with them on the day that they became the first band to ever have a number one record in the US and Canada in the same week. They were still very humble.

Pat Monahan of Train

December 31st, 2005 in Chicago. It takes a lot to get me out on New Year’s Eve (my birthday) but my friends in Train knew I was staying home watching television so they invited me out for some champagne and a midnight balloon drop. Pat must have had a little too much to drink, judging from this picture.

Black Keys

April 14th, 2008 in Chicago. I was shooting an ad for Shure Microphones in the afternoon and the band asked me if I wanted to stay and shoot the show. Who am I to say no!! For the first three quarters of the show, the guys were to far apart to get a good stage shot, but someone brought a piano out and Dan sat down and I got the shot.

Fall Out Boy

July 23rd, 2005 in Tinley Park, Illinois. On assignment from Chicago Magazine, I was given their publicists number to set up the day. As is usually the case, I asked to shoot the whole show. Her response was to ask me my least favorite question: “Have you ever worked in the music business before? If you have, you should know that that is absolutely impossible.” I told her that I was going to turn down the assignment, so she gave me the road managers cell number, and suggested that I could try to negotiate. I called him. When I told him my name he told me that he had seen my pictures in magazines for years and wanted to meet me and the band would be honored to be photographed by me!!! He also suggested that I spend the day on the band’s (air conditioned) bus- it was an outdoor show and take them outside whenever I wanted to do a photo shoot with them (I did four that day). He also said that shooting the whole show was no problem, as they let everyone do that!! So my one picture in the magazine became four pictures and my fee was doubled. Fun was had by all.

Velvet Revolver

May 19th, 2004 in Chicago. The debut tour of the new rock “Supergroup” which included members of Stone Temple Pilots and Guns and Roses. Great lighting and equal stage presence! This photograph shows Slash (Guns and Roses) and Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots).
