Advent

This was a play on the famous Clash album cover from the 1980’s. We rented a club in Chicago, hired a bass player, had a birthday cake made and the rest was history.

GHS Guitar Strings

This photograph of Faith Hill was originally shot for Shure Microphones, but the folks at GHS liked it and asked permission to use it.

Hamer Guitars

Hamer was a small boutique guitar manufacturer based in the Chicago suburbs. I photographed a lot of their products over the years, but the most fun I had was to photograph a series of artist endorser ads for them. Here are two of them.

RollingStone.com

This was an ad for rollingstone.com featuring Liz Phair. The dot in .com is her navel.

Shure Microphones

Shure was one of my biggest clients for more than 30 years. In 2008, I was tasked with shooting a series of artist endorser ads. Some were easy, some presented difficulty. For most I had all the time that I needed. Some- like the Who, I had 5 minutes to set up and 2 minutes to shoot. I didn’t know what I had till I got back to the hotel!

Ernie Ball Strings

This was a matter of finding the perfect existing photograph to match the vibe of the headline. This is my favorite live Keith Richards shot.

Technics

This is one of a series of ads that I shot around the country for Technics. It was fun to have an actual travel budget!

Washburn Guitars

This was photographed for Chicago based Washburn Guitars and was a lesson in photographic trouble shooting. The guitar had a mirror surface. How was I to get Dimebag’s reflection in the guitar without getting my reflection in it also.

Answer: I set up their guitar on a low table. I set up a large white background between me and the guitar and cut a hole in it for the lens to poke through. Then I had Dimebag kneel on the ground in front of the camera but slightly off to the side. I then lit him and the guitar and had him move around until he was positioned in the mirror surface. Worked like a charm!

Vic Firth Drumsticks

May 6th, 2011. I was in New York photographing Questlove on The Tonight Show set for Shure Microphones. I had one hour to photograph him (union rules). I had 5 minutes to go when we finished. As I got ready to say my goodbyes, a guy standing off to the side introduced himself as working for Vic Firth and asked if I could shoot a quick portrait for him. Luckily the light was right and everyone left happy!

Victoria Amp Company

My friend Mark from Victoria Amps asked me to shoot some ads for him when he was starting out. This was one of them.

City of Baton Rouge

The City of Baton Rouge tourism bureau wanted to honor their favorite son. My photograph fit the bill.

Warner Brothers Records

One of many times I drove north to Milwaukee to visit the BoDeans and photograph them for the record company.

Pee Wee Herman

A double page ad in trade magazines to celebrate Pee Wee’s sold out tour.

Trinity Irish Dance Company

Taking a page from a famous ad showing a ballet dancer balancing on an egg, we decided to use a potato! One big guy stood on either side of the smallest dancer and held her over the potato.
