This was a play on the famous Clash album cover from the 1980’s. We rented a club in Chicago, hired a bass player, had a birthday cake made and the rest was history.
This photograph of Faith Hill was originally shot for Shure Microphones, but the folks at GHS liked it and asked permission to use it.
Hamer was a small boutique guitar manufacturer based in the Chicago suburbs. I photographed a lot of their products over the years, but the most fun I had was to photograph a series of artist endorser ads for them. Here are two of them.
This was an ad for rollingstone.com featuring Liz Phair. The dot in .com is her navel.
Shure was one of my biggest clients for more than 30 years. In 2008, I was tasked with shooting a series of artist endorser ads. Some were easy, some presented difficulty. For most I had all the time that I needed. Some- like the Who, I had 5 minutes to set up and 2 minutes to shoot. I didn’t know what I had till I got back to the hotel!
This was a matter of finding the perfect existing photograph to match the vibe of the headline. This is my favorite live Keith Richards shot.
This is one of a series of ads that I shot around the country for Technics. It was fun to have an actual travel budget!
This was photographed for Chicago based Washburn Guitars and was a lesson in photographic trouble shooting. The guitar had a mirror surface. How was I to get Dimebag’s reflection in the guitar without getting my reflection in it also.
Answer: I set up their guitar on a low table. I set up a large white background between me and the guitar and cut a hole in it for the lens to poke through. Then I had Dimebag kneel on the ground in front of the camera but slightly off to the side. I then lit him and the guitar and had him move around until he was positioned in the mirror surface. Worked like a charm!
